It is a small waterfall and forms a beautiful natural wonder. Katrine, Poul, Tórur and I went for a small walk to the waterfall one day. Svartifoss (The Black Falls) in the Skaftafell National Park is surrounded by basalt columns. There’s a path that leads all the way to it and it’s even possible to walk up to the top of it, where the view of Hovvík and Nólsoy in the horizon is amazing. Surrounded by city houses, the waterfall is situated in a small central park. Despite their unquestionable beauty, they all look similar. To begin with, you look at them in awe, thinking you’ve never seen anything more beautiful. When you drive along the roads in the Faroe Islands, you see waterfall after waterfall. It is a one mile hike with around 450 feet in elevation gain. Along the trail to the waterfall, you will find three small waterfalls jofafoss. There’s a famous waterfall in Iceland with the same name, but this one in Hoyvík has yet to be discovered. The hike to Svartifoss is somewhat challenging. The hike will take about 45 minutes one way, about 1.6 km to the waterfall. The waterfall is called Svartifoss (‘black falls’) because of the black stones behind it. The remainder of the trail is a bit less interesting after experiencing the viewpoint, but you do get to hike down along the side of the cliff, catching views of the valley as you continue to descend.In the middle of Hoyvík, a busy suburb in Tórshavn, flows a waterfall, which is probably the prettiest in all of the Faroe Islands. After the waterfalls wed already seen at that. The trail will start to turn east as you get closer to the look out point.Īfter about a half a kilometer, you'll reach the viewpoint. Continue following the signage, you'll get to a crest overlooking Svartifoss.Īt the crest, the trail forks: left to Svartifoss and right to Sjonarnipa. You'll pass a few waterfalls and rivers on your way up.
The trail starts at the information centre at Skaftafell, and the first part of the walk is the same as the blue path hike mentioned above, except that you are not going to Svartifoss. Waterfall is not that big compared to what you see in Iceland elsewhere. From there it takes about 45 minutes to complete the 1.5 km (1 mile) hike and arrive at the waterfall. Hike past the amazing waterfalls near the trailhead to the mountain peak of Kristinartindar, where you can glimpse Morsárfoss, Icelands tallest waterfall, measuring 228 metres (you may need binoculars to get a good view of Morsárfoss). A beautiful waterfall with a nice unique backdrop. There’s a path called the Svartifoss trail which starts at the visitor’s center. Most of the hikes start from the Visitor's Center so you'll be on the same trail as most others. Once you’ve found a spot in the parking zone, it’s time do the Svartifoss hike. It doesn’t enter the top 10 lists for size or volume. Our favourite hike was the S6: Svartifoss/Sjónarnípa, which we think takes you to the best parts of the park in a fairly easy 8km round trip hike, taking you to the base of Svartifoss then up to Sjónarnípa lookout over-top of the glacier terminus. All the signage on the trails is extremely good. This hike has many breathtaking views to offer and those who like the adrenaline rush of the adventure must take this hike. Eventually, you will reach the basalt column steps on the other side of the ravine. The unique Svartifoss waterfall is pretty central to the park and there are a few hiking routes that pass through it. You need to keep following the signs till you reach a viewpoint on the top of Svartifoss waterfall. The Visitor's Center has lots of excellent information and trail maps posted outside. We stayed overnight in Skaftafell and were able to scope out all the hikes and tours in the area. Good camping facilities along with amazing hikes, Svartifoss, and an abundance of adventures to go on, make it a must-see stop on your trip. Skaftafell is an incredible area, right along Ring Road, nestled between two glacier tongues.
